Instagram’s chronological feed is back

The chronological feed is coming back after a promise was made last month.

Adam Mosseri, the head of the platform, announced on Wednesday that the core feed experience will be changed to allow users to choose between three different feeds. Two new options, Favorites and Following, sort content chronologically, while a third option offers a sorted feed.

Mosseri says that the non-chronological home feed will feature more and more recommendations over time, and that it will be more of a discovery hub than a way to keep up with content from people you already follow. Users can still find posts from everyone else they follow in the Following view, but Favorites will let anyone who uses the app easily keep up to date on all updates from a small group of friends and family.

Mosseri said that the changes are already out or going out over the next few weeks, and that the company plans to roll out a finalized version of the chronological feed options in the first half of 2022. Expect to see these changes broadly implemented into the app's experience, unlike many limited tests that Facebook and Instagram experiment with regularly.

Feed changes can be tested.
