Razer’s new Zephyr Pro mask has the voice amp feature we wanted all along

Two speaker grilles are near the bottom replaceable filter, and there is a voice amplifier button near one of the intakes.

It's Razer.

If you were disappointed that the voice amplifier feature was axed, don't worry. The Zephyr Pro mask was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show. It has two speaker grilles that flank its bottom, which is replaceable. One of the intakes has a button that can turn on or off voice amplification. At 60 decibels, the feature can make out your voice.

The starting price for the standard Zephyr mask will be $99.99 when the Zephyr Pro is released in 2022, but it will be 149.99 when it releases. Someday, you will be able to purchase a starter pack that includes the Zephyr Pro and 99 days of N95-grade filters for $199.99.

The voice amplifier was a feature that was supposed to be included in the Zephyr mask at the Consumer Electronics Show. It was removed due to weight and battery concerns after jumping from concept to product. The regular Zephyr has a similar weight and battery life to the Zephyr Pro.

The 206.1-gram weight of the Zephyr is what the pre-production units of the Zephyr Pro are targeting. The reduction in mass from the speaker grills should almost cancel out the addition of weight from voice amplification microphone and speakers. If you turn on the voice amplifier feature when you're talking, then shut it off when you're done, then the original battery life target of five to six hours will be achieved.

It might seem like Razer deserves some credit for achieving what it didn't think was possible a year ago. I will not try to hide my disappointment. Many companies follow up their standard-tier products with a more expensive version called a "pro" version. It is almost expected for consumer products to take that route, but it is not the right move for a mask to be bought to feel a little more safe during a pandemic.

The three N95-grade filters used in the Zephyr can last up to three days each.

I am happy that Razer is committed to delivering on the concept that it unveiled in January of 2021. If they are willing to accept that the Zephyr will make you stick out, then many people will benefit from a mask that can amplify their voice.

Nicole and I spoke with Razer about the Zephyr. You can see that panel.
