Six Nations 2022: Welsh Rugby Union considering hosting games in England

The Welsh Rugby Union is considering playing home Six Nations games in England.

The next review is scheduled for January and there is no set date for when the measures could be loosened.

Scotland will be in Wales on 12 February.

Faletau is expected to be ready for the Six Nations.

Wales will play France, Italy and France at the Principality Stadium in the space of eight days in March, meaning they will play over half the competition on home soil.

If spectators can prove they have full vaccinations or have a negative flow test, Wales will play at a full house of 82,000.

The Six Nations title will be defended by Wales against Ireland in Dublin on February 5, with current restrictions of 5,000 fans.

France has a limit of 5,000 fans, Italy has a Covid pass system in place, and Scotland has restrictions on the number of spectators.

During the Six Nations in 2021, the WRU lost over 13 million dollars in matchday revenue due to closed doors.

The WRU wants to play home games this year in front of full crowds in Wales and hopes that will be possible.

There are major logistical issues in relocating matches including tickets already sold for the games, availability of stadiums and public health concerns, with the prospect of thousands of Welsh fans travelling to England and back.

Throughout the Pandemic, the WRU has made it clear they will support the Welsh government's policy on public health. Future financial assistance from the Welsh government will be relied on by the governing body.

After considering moving games to England for the Autumn Nations Cup in November 2020 at the Principality Stadium, this is the second time the WRU has considered doing so.

Wales played their matches in Llanelli with no spectators.

Wembley Stadium will not be able to host any Welsh Six Nations games this year because they are preparing for England international football games in March.

West Ham's London Stadium is one of the venues that WRU officials visited in late 2020.

Two of the three weekends clash with Spurs home matches in the premier league will prove troublesome.

The Six Nations are hoping to get more clarity on the situation in each of the countries with meetings this week.

The Welsh pound should be spent in Wales.

Only 50 spectators are allowed to view outdoor events under Covid-19 restrictions.

Mr Drakeford has refused to give public assurances that fans will be allowed to return in time for the Six Nations as case numbers for the Omicron variant continue to surge.

Andrew Davies is the leader of the Welsh Conservatives.

He said that many people in Wales think the current restrictions do not make sense.

I am cautiously optimistic that the initial fear over Omicron is not coming to pass and that the Labour government needs to have a long hard think about if these restrictions are necessary on Friday.

If more of the Welsh pound is spent in London, it would be a blow to the Welsh economy.

Wales is currently at alert level two because of the rapidly spreading Omicron variant. The situation is being reviewed by the cabinet on a weekly basis.
