People with Omicron don't gasp for air as much as with other variants, but are getting 'really sick in a different way,' an ER doctor says

New York City has more than 5,000 hospital admissions as of January 3, according to official data.

The ER doctor said that Omicron was making people sick in a different way.

There's so much of it, Dr. Craig Spencer said.

"The nightmare is over, but this is frightening too," he said.

A leading ER doctor has said that Omicron is making people sick in a different way than the original virus.

In comparison to the first wave in March 2020, fewer patients were "gasping for air" and requiring oxygen, according to Dr. Craig Spencer, associate professor in Emergency Medicine at the Columbia University Medical Center.

Spencer said that there was a lot of it and it was impacting patients in different ways.

Spencer said that there were record numbers of people with COVID-19 in the ER. COVID was the only thing seen in the ERs during the first surge.

Spencer said that COVID-19 was making pre-existing medical conditions worse. He said that it could cause a life-threatening condition in people with diabetes.

Older people with COVID-19 can become too weak to leave the hospital and can't walk.

Patients who have done everything to avoid the virus are often in beds next to patients who have an infectious disease. The cancer patient is receiving treatment. He said that those who were immunocompromised or sick with something else.

The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 in New York City has risen four times in the last two weeks and is higher than it has been in the last year.

The nightmare is over. He said that this is scary as well.

In the UK, where Omicron is the most common variant, two-thirds of COVID-19 patients were hospitalized directly.

Christina Pagel, professor of operational research at University College London, said on the social networking site that the rest were a mix of people.

It's not clear if Omicron infections cause different symptoms to other variants or if immunity from previous vaccinations stops it from becoming more severe.

Spencer said that most of the sickest patients were notvaccinated. If you haven't been boosted yet, now is the time. He said it makes a difference.

The vaccine status affects the symptoms.

On Monday, Mucio Kit Delgado, assistant professor in Emergency Medicine at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center emergency department, said that he had seen a "strikingly consistent pattern" in symptoms based on vaccination status.

If a person catches COVID-19 they're likely to be at home doing fine or having regular cold/flu-like symptoms, but if they get a booster they're more likely to be at home.

He said he found many patients had been wiped out when people were not boosted. People who were older than 55 and had other medical problems were often admitted overnight for fluids and support, but usually went home within a day or two.

In his experience, unvaccinated people were the ones who got sick and had to be hospitalized because they needed oxygen. He said that some were younger than him.
