The New York Post reported Tuesday that the Mets were close to hiring Joey Cora as their third baseman coach.

The older brother of Boston Red Sox manager Alex was let go by the Pittsburgh Pirates at the end of the 2021 season after five years as third base coach. Buck Showalter took over as the team's manager less than three weeks ago, and he'll make him the first coach hired under him.

The Mets retained Jeremy Hefner as their pitching coach but are still in the process of filling other vacancies.

A middle infielder from 1987 to 1998 who transitioned into a coach shortly thereafter, he was an All-Star team late in his career. After working as a manager in the Mets' minor league system, he was the third base coach for the Chicago White Sox, who won a World Series under Guillen. In 2012 he was Guillen's bench coach with the Miami Marlins and has interviewed for managerial jobs throughout his career.

Gary DiScarcina was let go as a result of the shake-up that followed the firing of former Mets manager Luis Rojas. The New York Yankees' third-base coach, and the Washington Nationals' third-base coach, both have the same position.
