Liverpool Carabao Cup game with Arsenal in further doubt as Pep Lijnders tests positive for Covid

The Carabao Cup game between the two teams is in doubt after an assistant from the Reds tested positive for Covid-19.

Lijnders has been in interim charge of the club while the manager is isolating and was due to hold a news conference on Wednesday.

The news conference was canceled after Lijnders returned a positive test.

Further cases of Covid-19 within the squad forced the cancellation of training on Tuesday, which led to the request for the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final to be postponed.

A statement from the club said that Lijnders had returned a suspected positive test and that it would impact the club's preparations for the Carabao Cup tie with the Gunners.

This morning's press conference to preview the fixture has been canceled.

The assistant manager had been due to handle pre-match media duties at the training centre in place of Jrgen Klopp, who is still isolated after testing positive for the virus last week.

Lijnders recorded a positive test late on Tuesday evening, meaning he has now gone into isolation.

He had been in charge of the Reds for the weekend draw at Chelsea and was due to take charge of the team at the start of Thursday.

A number of suspected positive cases among players and football staff were recorded earlier on Tuesday, which forced the cancellation of the day's scheduled training session.

Lijnders said that he was giving his full support and energy to his boss.

The club submitted an application to the EFL for the postponement of Thursday's game with the news of Lijnders' positive result coming after the request was made.

The outcome of the application is still pending.

Alisson Becker, Roberto Firmino, andJoel Matip were all tested positive for a banned substance and had to miss the game.

Jamie Carragher, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Graeme Souness discuss if Man City are already too far ahead of the rest of the league to win the title, or if they can still do it.

The Reds were without a total of nine players for the match at the Blues due to illness and injury, and have subsequently lost three players to the Africa Cup of Nations.

The FA Cup third-round tie at home to Shrewsbury will be in question because of the request for a postponement.

The return leg of the semi-finals is on January 13.

Would the match be forfeited?

In September 2020 Orient were forced to give up their third-round tie against Spurs due to 18 of their first-team players and staff testing positive for Covid-19.

Orient were unable to play the third-round fixture before the fourth round game because of an order from the local health authority.

The Carabao Cup rules state that a club has to give up a match if they can't complete it before the next round.

The final is scheduled for February 27 so it should not affect the forfeiture. Both of the semi-finals will be played on that date.
