Chip shortages cost GM the US vehicle sales crown it’s held since 1931

CNBC reported Tuesday that General GM is no longer the top seller of vehicles in the US. Toyota sold 114,000 more vehicles than GM in the year 2021, according to reports.

The total sales of GM were down last year. Due to chip shortages, vehicle and technology companies have had to cut features from some vehicles, such as HD radios, and GM has had to cut features from some vehicles.

The parent company of Chevrolet and GMC says the chip situation is improving. We plan to take advantage of the strong economy and anticipated improved chip supplies to grow our sales and share. Steve Carlisle, GM's president of North America, said in a statement that the company would strengthen its industry leadership in trucks and begin its drive to EV leadership in North America. The new Hummer EV is one of the things that the company is focusing on now, along with the upcoming Chevys and Nissans.

Despite having to cut production last year due to the chip shortage, Toyota boasted record years for many cars. According to a press release, the top automaker in the US leads in sales of sedans with the Camry, SUVs with the RAV4, and minivans with the Sienna. The company reported that it was the number one seller of electric vehicles for the 22nd year in a row.
