Trump cancels event planned for anniversary of Jan. 6 Capitol riot

A protester holding a Confederate battle flag and wearing a tear gas mask is among a crowd of protesters at a rally to contest the certification of the 2020 U.S. presidential election results.

On the first anniversary of the deadly Capitol riot, former President Donald Trump canceled an event that was supposed to be a press conference.

Therioters were going to be defended by Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

The lie that the race was rigged against Trump was spread by him after he lost the election. The confirmation of Biden's win was delayed by hundreds of Trump's supporters storming the Capitol.

In recent months, Trump has defended the rioters who chanted about hanging then-Vice President Mike Pence, who refused to challenge the Electoral College results.

The former president said in a statement that he was canceling the event due to the "total bias and dishonesty" of the media and the House select committee.

Instead, Trump will talk about the same important topic at the Arizona rally.

Dozens of subpoenas have been issued to Trump's current and former associates by the select committee tasked with investigating the facts and causes of the Jan. 6 riot.

The chairman of the panel told CNN that investigators want to speak with the vice president.
