People Have Been Having Less Sex—whether They’re Teenagers or 40-Somethings

Human sexual activity affects cognitive function, health, happiness and overall quality of life. Researchers are alarmed at declines in sexual activity around the world because of the huge range of benefits. A recent study has shown a decline in penile-vaginal intercourse, anal sex, and partner masturbation in the U.S. Adolescents report less solo masturbation.

The authors wrote in the study that the decreases are not trivial. The proportion of adolescents who reported no sexual activity, either alone or with partners, rose from 28.8% to 44.2% among young men and from 49.5% to 74 percent among young women between 2009 and 2018. The researchers obtained the information from the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior and used it to get responses from 4,547 people. The respondents ranged in age from 14 to 49 years.
