Liverpool request Carabao Cup match at Arsenal is postponed because of rise in Covid cases

The manager of the team missed the match at the club after testing positive for Covid-19.

The first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final between the club and the team from France will be delayed because of an increase in Covid-19 cases.

The Reds did not train on Tuesday.

A suspected positive test forced the cancellation of Sunday's draw at Chelsea.

Alisson, Matip, and Firmino missed the game while three of the staff tested positive.

The Reds' squad has been stretched further by the departure of three players for the Africa Cup of Nations.

The match is scheduled to start at 19:45 on Thursday.

The need for travelling supporters to be given as much notice as possible of any potential postponement is one of the considerations which led to today's application to the EFL.

With no prospect of the current situation improving ahead of Thursday's fixture and the potential for it to worse, the club considers it both prudent and reasonable to ask for the fixture to be rearranged.

The application process will be updated, as well as the restart of training, in due course.

The second leg of the FA Cup third round is due to be played on 13 January, before the game against Arsenal.

The other Carabao Cup semi-final will be played on Wednesday.

Positive Covid tests decreased for eight weeks in the latest round of testing.

There were 94 new cases of players and staff in the seven days up to and including 2 January, down from a record 103 cases in the previous seven days.
