American Airlines 'Roach Coach' Boeing 777 Flies Again

American Airlines sent an eight year old plane to their maintenance facility for insect abatement.

The plane was out and back in service for a couple of weeks before it flew a single segment from Miami to Dallas and Fort Worth.

I wrote about the out of service aircraft in early December, but it was still on the ground.

I reached out to American Airlines on November 18th and they promised to get back to me with details, but they have been tight-lipped about the condition of the plane. This is the best aircraft in the fleet when there are no insect issues.

American wouldn't say what insects invaded the aircraft, or what damage they might have done while there that caused so much time in maintenance. They didn't speak to why they thought the plane was airworthy in mid-November, but had to return for more insect work after only a single segment. Was it related to passenger experience issues, mechanical issues or both?

A person shared.

I work for AA. There aren't any mechanical issues, the plane is here because of a bad insect invasion.

We bombed the plane 9 times and then sent it out again. The 9 bombings weren't enough to bring it back.

The plane is getting completely torn apart so that we can finally put an end to the problem. The seats, carpets, lavs, galleys, floorboards, everything is coming out so that we can get rid of this problem and serve our customers better.

The plane is back in use. On New Year's Day, it was ferried to Dallas. It flew Dallas to London on Monday. It will fly to New York and then on to Sao Paolo and Miami. After several months, hopefully it is free of pests.

The airline is downsizing because of the planes parked across their destinations. Almost all of the seats have been empty. American's aircraft are currently on the ground in four primary clusters. Here are where their fleets are located.
