CDC shortens waiting period for Pfizer Covid boosters to 5 months

On Monday, October 4, 2021, a Pfizer covid-19 vaccine booster shot will be given to 75-year-old Hattie Pierce at the Safeway on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc.

The federal government used to recommend that people get a booster shot a month after their second dose, but now they can.

The recommended waiting period for people who completed their primary Covid-19 vaccine series has been updated.

People who received the Moderna vaccine must wait at least six months after their second dose before getting a booster, while people who received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine must wait at least two months after their first shot.

The CDC now recommends that children with moderate or severely compromised immune systems receive a third shot as part of their primary vaccine series, 28 days after their second dose. Pfizer is the only vaccine authorized for that age group.

The FDA authorized Pfizer to give boosters for 5 months and third shots for kids with compromised immune systems a day after the CDC recommended against it.

The CDC recommends that people get a boost of protection in the face of Omicron and that the most vulnerable children get an additional dose to maximize protection against COVID-19.

If you or your children are eligible for a third dose or a booster, please get one as soon as possible.
The FDA recommended that adolescents aged 12 to 15 be given boosters for the vaccine.
