Ahead of their press conferences at this year's truncated and part-virtual CES, both Intel andAMD are teasing big announcements for the show. The product premiere forAMD is due to take place at 10am, while the live experience forIntel is due to take place at 1pm.

The maximum boost clock speed of Intel's upcoming CPUs is expected to be 5.5 GHz, which is the key spec in the tease. The Core i9-12900K can reach a top boost clock speed of 5.2 GHz and is 300MHz better than the current flagship. The new processor may be called the Core i9-12900KS and will be released in the first quarter of 2022.

In her own tease, Lisa Su didn't reveal much in the way of specifics. The company is expected to announce the next generation of its chips at the show. The Ryzen 5000 mobile lineup was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in January of 2021. The use of 3D V-Cache is expected to increase performance by 15 percent.

It is not clear how long it will take until you can buy the new CPUs thanks to the ongoing global chip shortage. The CEO of Intel has warned that supply could be tight until at least 2023, while TSMC has previously said shortages could continue into this year.
