Interview with Oman Air CEO Abdulaziz Al Raisi

By the end of 2022, the Oneworld Alliance hopes to have Oman Air as a member.

The Sultanate of Oman is known for its hospitable people. The CEO of the airline told me in a recent interview that there are several aspects that became very important for the airline.

OneWorld Alliance is joining.

Oneworld invited us to join the alliance and we are in discussions with them. Al Raisi told me that most of the code-share flights will be routed via Doha. He made it clear that to become a Oneworld member, you have to go through several stages.

We have to follow the process and I hope we become a full Oneworld alliance member by the end of 2022," he said.

Not all of the code-share agreements will remain once the carrier joins the alliance. He said that some of the code-shares are very good, but others are not so cooperative.

Plans to operate its own flights to the US have been stopped. We will serve the US via Doha. Al Raisi said that the airline is working with American Airlines via London and on to other US destinations.

The network and fleet.

The global COVID-19 Pandemic has caused a problem for Oman Air. We were able to come out of the crisis with the help of the government. Our network is increasing a bit because of the reopening of the country for tourism. Routes to Europe have been re-opened, but with fewer frequencies, than before.

70% or 80% of our before Covid-19 network will be back in use by 1Q of 2022.

Al Raisi said that there are no cancellation of orders, but that some deliveries will be delayed. In December, the airline plans to take two Boeing MAX deliveries and two 787s. The whole process of joining the alliance was deferred until after the next two years, he said.

He said that the competition in the Gulf region is different because of the focus on point-to-point traffic that Oman Air has. As tourism is so important for our country and the destination is also promoted, in the future we will have less focus on the transfer business at our hub in Muscat, said Al Raisi.
