A mother of five who was unvaccinated when she tested positive for COVID-19 and spent over two months in a coma is now urging people to get their shots.
I was in a coma for 65 days. "I was in the hospital for four and a half months." I couldn't walk. I lost my motor skills and my muscle, dropped 35 pounds, and came home in a wheelchair, re-learned how to walk again.
She told CNN that she was initially opposed to vaccinations because she was healthy.
She told the outlet that doctors told her family that she had a 5% chance of survival.
She thought she would be fine after a few days, but that wasn't the case.
She said she had been on a feeding tube for months and was unable to speak. She says she still has a raspy voice despite her recovery.
"I don't want anyone to go through what I went through," he said. I don't know what else to say, just have an extra layer of protection and get the vaccine. Get the booster. I think everyone should have a choice, but at the same time it's important to protect yourself and others.
Another unvaccinated woman ended up in a coma last year. Bettina Lerman was expected to be taken off life-support on October 29 after she woke up from her coma, after she tested positive for the virus in September.
Her family said she had underlying health conditions. Andrew said that his mother intended to get a vaccine before she traveled to Maine, but ran out of time. She tested positive for COVID-19 while taking care of Andrew's father in Maine.
The risk of severe illness has been cut by vaccines. A real-world study of 23 million people found that it could cut the risk of severe disease in half.
