Why Sony Pushed Jared Leto’s ‘Morbius’ To April 1

'Morbius' is a film starringJared Leto.

Sony.

The first Morbius trailer was released two years ago, and a new one will be released on January 13, 2020. The film was supposed to be released on July 31, 2020. It has been delayed five more times, the last one being on April 1, 2021.

No Time to Die was the first big presumed-2021 release to take flight when Covid variables didn't improve in early 2021. Concerns over Omicron infections may have played a part in the delay, but it may not have been entirely defensive.

With Morbius out of the way, Sony has an entirely open lane in terms of kid-friendly, franchise-specific offerings, including Spider-Man: No Way Home. The biggest movie of January is Scream, which is R-rated, as is Jackass Forever on February 4 and Death on the Nile on February 11.

If the other January releases wipe out, Spidey can keep its IMAX and PLF screens until February 4, when Moonfall will be released. I am trying to look on the positive side, but I am not sure if I am being overly optimistic or if we are about to see more delays because too many people chose not to get the vaccine.

It is possible that the movie will do as well in April as it did in January. Sonic the Hedgehog will skew younger while Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore will skew fan-only. It won't hurt if Leto wins a Best Supporting actor Oscar for House of Gucci on March 27. I am not happy about The Lost City having a competition with The Avenger, but Sony and Paramount don't have to play nice.

Will we see more delays? The only other big movies opening in January are The 355, a distribution-only deal for Universal, and Paramount's Scream, which will open over the next two weeks. The Halle Berry/Patrick Wilson disaster epic and the Jackass movie could be our unofficial return to the theaters for 2022, if there is reason to believe the worst will be over by February.

We have had vaccines for over a year. At some point, society needs to start punishing those who choose not to protect themselves over those who have done what is needed. I hope this is the last big movie delayed article I have to do, because I thought that was over.

We will have to see the Morbius trailer before every movie we see in a theater for another two months. Jim Morrison's estate will get royalties.
