Cineplex, the largest theater chain in Canada, is preparing to temporarily shutter its Ontario auditoriums in response to a government mandate limiting indoor business to help curb the spread of omicron.

The theaters in Ontario will be closing on January 5th, and the cinemas will reopen as soon as possible. The measure came as Ontario enacted restrictions on schools, dining, and entertainment venues to prevent what Ontario premier Doug Ford characterized during a Monday news briefing as a "a wave of new cases in the days and weeks ahead."

To make it as easy as possible, we have begun processing ticket refunds back to our guests. The theater chain said in a statement this week that guests don't need to contact their guest services or local theatre team for a refund. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.

17 theaters in Quebec were temporarily closed in December.

Similar measures haven't taken place on a large scale in the US, and theaters haven't suggested they're going to make changes. It is worth noting that the reason for the Ontario closings was a wider government initiative. In December, President Joe Biden said that the US had no plans to issue a "lockdown" order. We know more. We have to stay focused. That is where we are.

The president said during the speech that they were making sure that COVID-19 didn't close businesses or schools. The rule for businesses with more than 100 employees was reinstated by the federal court last week.

Spider-Man: No Way Home was the most successful movie of the year, even as the number of COVID-19 cases continued to increase.

The spread of omicron has impacted multiple high-profile film and TV events. The Book of Boba Fett fan event was postponed until February 8th due to the series finale. A red carpet event for James Gunn's title Peacemaker has been canceled as a precautionary measure.

The theater chain told The Verge in a statement that the majority of its theaters in Ontario would begin operating at 50 percent capacity in accordance with government directives. All 17 of Cineplex's theaters in Quebec will be closed on December 20th.
