103,329 people are hospitalized in the US with Covid-19.
CNN reports that the number is a huge increase from last week, when 71,000 were hospitalized.
Covid-19 hospitalizations peaked at over 142,000 about a year ago, and last hit over 100,000 in September.
According to HHS data, at least 70% of intensive care unit beds are filled in thirty-eight states.
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, unvaccinated adults face an eight times higher rate of hospitalization than those who have received the vaccine.
The next few weeks are going to be difficult, said the Surgeon General during an interview on The View. We are already seeing a record level of cases and we are seeing hospitalizations start to tick up as well, and we are seeing some of our hospital systems getting strained at this point," Murthy said. South Africa and the U.K. had a rapid rise in cases, but they also had a steep fall after that.
There was a total of 405,470. According to the New York Times' Covid tracker, the U.S. has averaged over the past seven days about the same number of cases as the previous seven days.
The key background.
The omicron variant was discovered in South Africa in November and quickly spread around the globe. The variant has a high level of transmission, accounting for a large number of cases, but it may not be as deadly as other variant. Experts warn that the large surge of cases could still overwhelm hospitals, despite early studies suggesting that omicron causes milder illness. The number of cases in the U.S. could stress hospitals, even though the rate of hospitalization with omicron has been lower in other countries, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci.
The US has broken the previous record of new covidy cases.
The South African study suggests that omicron is less likely to cause hospitalization and develop into severe disease.
