The new Apple Watch Series 7 has a pretty intense commercial. I was left speechless when I first saw it. The first thing that came to my mind was, "Well, that was mighty frightening."
The company released a commercial on New Year's Day that starts with a person on the phone. The first three calls were made by people who used their Apple Watch to get in touch with emergency services when they got into trouble. One person had a car accident, another got pushed out to sea while paddle boarding, and a third broke their leg while on their farm.
We reached out to Apple to confirm that these are real calls. We didn't hear back from the company by the time of publication, so we'll make sure to update this article if someone comes back to us.
The calls get very intense. The person who had a car accident tells the operator that they can't get out of the car because of the water. The person says the water is getting to his neck. The person who got stuck on a paddle board says they can't find the wind anymore. The person hurt at the farm tells the operator to hurry because they are in a lot of pain.
The commercial is a little more than a minute long, and I am getting anxious at this point. I think that Apple is anticipating this and is cutting to the chase.
Apple says that the four people were saved in minutes with the help of their watch.
Ah, relief. I had to watch it many times to write this article, and that was one stressful minute.
If these calls are real, I am so happy that these poor people got help. Even if they are not real, they show a key feature of Apple Watches. I am left wondering if there is any other way to scare people into buying the Series 7 than with cellular. They could have easily gotten the same point across and used the phone calls in a more positive way. They could have changed the music.
I am a proud Series 7 owner. I like the thing and its big screen. I am glad that there are commercials like these that remind me of the usefulness of the Apple Watch feature, because it isn't the first thing I would think to do in an emergency.
We already live in a world full of fear and anxiety, so we don't need more promotional content in that vein. It is very strange for Apple to try to exploit these feelings to sell more Series 7 devices, especially when it does not need to.
