Appearances matter and Floridians are watching | Editorial

Floridians are watching the appearance of the people.

Ron DeSantis, who has spent $3 million this year in zipping around the state in a $15.5 million plane that is supposed to be used only for public business, must think that Floridians don't know what campaigning looks like.

If there are slogans on the podium instead of a simple, dignified state seal, that looks like campaigning.

If there is an audience of fans yelling, cheering and waving signs with veiled references to profanity instead of experts and charts with critical public information, that also looks like campaigning.

It looks like he is campaigning instead of addressing his duties as this state's elected leader. He just made an appearance and should be sending out more information about his campaign. Looks like campaigning. Conspiracy theories involving respected federal health officials and stolen elections are spinning fantasies. That sounds like lying. Also, campaigning.

It is certainly not working when the governor is hitting bakeries, barbecue joints and coffee shops across Florida instead of talking about the life-and-death concerns of millions of Floridians whoentrusting him with the state's highest office. He has a lot to say about bagels, sandwiches, coffee, and other baked goods in his feed. Unemployment, the affordable housing crisis and the threat of the coronaviruses are not important. He seems to regard the plight of the people of Florida who are dying of COVID as barely worth paying attention to.

Have you spoken to any of the families?

When new cases increase, it is only a matter of time before those grieving families begin to increase in size?

For a moment, forget about that potential compassion deficit. The law states that public officials aren't allowed to campaign on the state's dime. They don't get to use the state's plane, bought for official duties, as an aeronautical pack mule. Why does he need a plane? He doesn't get to co-opt the taxpayer-paid employees of the governor's office and state agency heads as props and head cheerleaders, no matter how eager they may be to fulfill those roles. We need those people to work hard on state business.

The use of the state plane by Ron DeSantis and the potential for a "blurring of the lines" between public duty and political posturing are right. He doesn't get to use public resources for his own benefit. It is more convenient for him. It is not one of the perks of the job.

Good Lord, governor. You know this. You attended Harvard Law School. When someone slips and says they went to Yale Law School, there is a lot of reaction. There is no quicker way to hear from a Yale Law representative who is requesting a correction.

You know how many people in Florida are mourning today and how many are terrified by the sound of coughing from another room. You know it is a lot.

We don't expect you to visit all of them. We don't expect you to bring muffins or orange juice for them.

Show some compassion. There is a little decorum. Florida is more than a backdrop for the glory that is you. Florida is more than props. You are putting their needs first.

You could tell it was sarcasm. The condemnation of the inaccurate claim was swift after President Donald Trump said during a rally in June that increased testing was responsible for the surging number of infections.
