Florida Demands 30,000 Covid-19 Antibody Doses As Hospitals Across U.S. Scramble To Secure Life-Saving Treatment

The only abundantly available treatments are not effective against the omicron variant, which is surging in Florida, despite the fact that Gov. Ron DeSantis demanded between 30,000 and 40,000 doses of Covid-19.

After research showed that the treatments were not effective against the omicron variant, DeSantis asked the government to reverse its pause on distributing the treatments.

The federal government decided against using Eli Lilly and Regeneron treatments in Florida because of a preliminary study, which was contrary to the claims of the governor.

Desantis said Florida would be able to open five or 10 more treatment sites if the additional doses were given.

The state of Oklahoma waited to receive 576 doses of the anti-omicron treatment from AstraZeneca, which was proven effective against Covid-19, in order to prevent patients from getting the disease, according to KFOR-TV.

Some hospitals in New York and Texas reported running out of the drug on December 21, and some said they would run out by January 16.

High-risk patients are less likely to suffer serious symptoms or be hospitalized with them. The treatments by Eli Lilly and Regeneron were effective against previous coronaviruses, but were unable to attach to the omicron variant due to the fact that it had a different structure. The federal government stopped distributing treatments to the states until more data emerges. The Department of Health and Human Services said in a release that additional doses of the treatment will be delivered to states this week. Omicron accounts for 78.3% of cases in the region, including Florida, compared to 58.6% in the U.S.

In December, Florida Democrats criticized DeSantis for appearing to take time off during a record-breaking spike in Covid-19. A spokesman for the governor told Fox News that the governor was with his wife on one of the days that critics said he was missing.
