Trump Endorses Hungary’s Viktor Orban—Widely Considered An Autocrat

Donald Trump offered his complete support and endorsement to Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who is seen as one of Europe's most far-right, authoritarian heads of state.

A photo of Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orban was taken on May 9, 2019, while a photo of then President Donald Trump was taken on March 28, 2019. The photo was taken by Daniel Minascu and Saul LOEB.

Since becoming Hungary's prime minister in 2010, Orban has enacted tough anti-immigration policies and rolled back the rights of the LGBTQ+ community.

Orban was one of a group of foreign leaders who supported Trump's reelection bid in 2020.

Polls show a tight race between Orban's right-wing alliance and the six-party coalition formed to defeat him in Hungary's parliamentary elections.

"Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbn loves his country and wants safety for his people, and he has done a wonderful job in protecting Hungary, stopping illegal immigration," Trump said in a statement.

Critics.

Hungary was reclassified as having a "transitional or hybrid regime" by the Freedom House. Orban says his policies support liberal democracy.

Tucker Carlson, host of the Fox News show, sat down with Orban for an interview after he held his show in Hungary. In an interview with Carlson, Orban said he supports Trump's "America first" policy as part of a broader support for right-wing nationalism worldwide. The relationship between Trump and Orban and other strongmen leaders was a worrying sign for pro-democracy advocates. It's rare for Trump to endorse a foreign candidate, but he did so for Bolsonaro.

Surprising fact.

Even though other pro-Trump leaders like Russia's Putin and Turkey's Erdogan remained quiet after the election, Orban still wished President Joe Biden well in his win over Trump in the 2020 presidential election.

The latest right-wing strongman to endorse Trump is from Brazil.

Tucker Carlson and the far right embraced Hungary's authoritarian leader.

World leaders from Russia, China, Turkey, and Brazil are not in a rush to praise Biden.
