5 things to know before the stock market opens Monday

On the first trading day of the new year, the blue chip index futures rose more than 150 points. Even as Covid cases surged above year-ago highs, futures tied to the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq pointed to even stronger moves higher. The shares of the electric car maker jumped in the premarket after their vehicle deliveries beat estimates. The company rose nearly 50% last year. The S&P 500 has increased in three of the last four years. The three-year winning streak for the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the three-year winning streak for the Nasdaq were both over the course of the year.

The Federal Reserve building in Washington, D.C. will be open on December 19, 2021.

The first Federal Reserve interest rate hike in over a year could happen in the quarter that starts on Monday. The December meeting of the Fed will be released on Wednesday. Ahead of Thursday's weekly initial jobless claims data and Friday's government employment report for last month, the December report on hiring at U.S. companies is out Wednesday.

When the EV maker reported its first annual profit in 2020, it increased full-year deliveries by 87%. In the fourth quarter of the year, analysts had expected 267,000 deliveries, with 897,000 for the year. The Model Y will be produced at the company's new factory in Austin, Texas. It wants to open another factory in Germany in 2022.

The Omicron coronaviruses variant was discussed during a press briefing at the White House.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is considering including a negative test in its five-day isolation guidance for Americans who show no symptoms of Covid but have been exposed. The top White House medical advisor said Sunday that they would be hearing more about that from the CDC. The CDC was not happy with last week's recommendations, which cut the isolation time from 10 days to five. The FDA said last week that preliminary research shows that at- home rapid tests can detect the omicron variant, but may have reduced sensitivity.

Airlines canceled more than 1,700 flights on Monday. More than 13,700 flights were canceled from Christmas Eve to New Year's Day, or 5.6% of their schedules. The airlines blamed bad weather and infections for the disruptions. Airlines expected to be among the busiest days since the beginning of the Pandemic. The Transportation Security Administration screened more people last year. That is off about 30% from 2019.
