If the clouds cooperate, you can start the year with a shower. The peak of the Quadrantid shower is on 3 January. The peak is expected to occur at 10pm GMT, although this can vary by a day or two.
Between December and January, the shower produces a lot of shooting stars in the sky. It can produce more than 100 meteors an hour under ideal conditions.
The peak is often over in a matter of hours. The moon is new this year and will have set before the show starts, which will help visibility. To further enhance your chances, look for the dark sky and wrap up warm. There is a waiting game.
The chart shows the view from London at midnight. Look off to one side, instead of looking directly at the radiant. The best view will be after midnight. The best place to see the Quadrantids is in the north.
We've hit our goal.
You can still support us.
Our readers helped us beat our goal. We raised more than a million dollars for our reporting. It will be a year with many challenges, including an erosion of democratic norms, an escalating climate emergency, and corrosive racial inequality. We need your help to cover these and many other issues in the new year.
The Guardian US has brought an international lens to its coverage of America. More than 1.5 million readers from 180 countries have recently taken the step to support the Guardian financially, keeping us open to all and fiercely independent. We couldn't do this without you.
We can set our own agenda and provide trustworthy journalism that is free from commercial and political influence, offering a counterbalance to the spread of misinformation. We can investigate and challenge without fear or favour. It is reader support that makes our journalism possible and gives us the emotional support and motor energy to keep doing journalism that matters.
Guardian journalism is available for everyone to read, even if they can't afford it. We believe in information equality.
We want readers to have a comprehensive, international perspective on critical events shaping our world. We decided to stop advertising from fossil fuel companies, and to set a course to achieve net zero emissions by the year 2030.
Our journalism is powered by every contribution and sustains our future. It only takes a minute to support the Guardian. Happy new year, and thank you.
