The Ashes: Joe Root says England can 'stand up in adversity'

England have not won a match in Australia in 13 years.

England have the chance to "stand up in adversity", says captain Joe Root.

The fourth Test is in Australia.

Chris Silverwood is one of a number of staff in isolation, while coaching reinforcements and net bowlers have been withdrawn because of Covid.

It has made things difficult but it is a chance to come together.

Silverwood, pace bowling coach Jon Lewis, spin bowling coach and strength and conditioning coach are not present.

Adam Hollioake, a former England one-day captain, was due to join the squad to assist with coaching, but was ruled out due to being a Covid close contact.

The tourists' training session was disrupted on Sunday when a local net bowler was found to have tested positive.

The backroom team, including the media manager and medical staff, have been used in training sessions.

"We're trying to manage it in the best way we can," he said. It's going to look very different in terms of practice.

"We have to be good humans, good professionals, help each other out, and try and get the best possible preparation for these last two games."

England lost the series at the earliest possible opportunity after a third Test defeat.

They have suffered three whitewashes in Australia in the last 15 years, the last being a 4-0 defeat.

" Whether it be putting pride back into the badge, whether it be making sure that we get Test Championship points, or for individuals making sure that they're pushing hard to cement their spots in the team, it's all about putting pride back into the badge." The group of players have a lot to play for.

We have to stay together. One of the great Test venues in world cricket is where we have to put in a performance.

The England record of 59 set by Cook will be passed by Joe Root when he captains in his 60th Test on Wednesday.

After the defeat in Melbourne, where the series was lost, he wouldn't be drawn on his future as skipper, but he did say that he wouldn't be looking for a new job.

He has the support of all-rounders Chris Woakes and Ben Stokes, who are the most likely replacements.

When asked about his role, he once again deferred.

"I need to make sure that I'm focused on these two games," said Root. I need to try to get the best out of the group, make sure we put in those performances, and keep banging on about it.

The captaincy at the end of the series will be a concern. I have two big games to manage.

Steve Smith said the hosts were surprised by Stuart Broad's peripheral role in the series.

Broad missed out on the first two Tests in Australia because the pitches could have suited his style.

We have been surprised. Smith said there were probably two that would have suited him.

He has always been a good opponent for me. He and Jimmy Anderson have been performing together for a long time. Maybe we'll see them together this week.
