2022 will be the ‘year of vaccination,’ says director of vaccine institute

Larry Flynt's Hustler Club in Las Vegas, Nevada will host a pop-up COVID-19 vaccination clinic on December 21, 2021.

The year of vaccine development is 2021, and the year of booster shots is 2022, according to a leading expert.

The International Vaccine Institute, an independent non-profit devoted to research on vaccines for poor countries, said that the year of vaccine will be 2022, which will be either primary for people who haven't been vaccinations or booster vaccinations for those of us who have.

Kim told CNBC on Monday that it will mark the year when anti-covid drugs will come to the fore.

The battle against the coronaviruses has killed more than 5 million people worldwide since it emerged in late 2019.

Paxlovid was the first oral antiviral drug to be approved for use in the U.S.

The more-transmissible omicron variant emerged as the year drew to a close, and cases around the world have surged in recent weeks.

The US had a record high caseload last week. According to the data, the average number of daily new cases was more than 265,000 as of Tuesday. The previous high was set on January 11 last year, with about 252,000 average daily cases.

South Korea said Friday that it will extend restrictions after a surge in serious Covid infections.

Kim said that the priority is to get vaccines to people who need them, especially those in poorer countries.

Omicron is not the omega and we are going to see additional mutants and variant of concern, and hopefully we become more equitable in the use of vaccines.

Supply of vaccines will not be an issue in the future. The issue will be who can get that vaccine into the hands of people who need it. Kim said that the key to getting people to get a vaccine is to get people in low income countries to get a vaccine.

According to Our World in Data, 58.3% of the world's population has received at least one dose of a Covid vaccine, but only 8.5% of people in low income countries have been inoculated with at least one dose.

Kim pointed out a gap at the diagnosis stage of Covid-19.

He said that lower income countries don't do as many tests and sequences. The coronaviruses case samples help track new variant.

He said that countries need to address the divide better.

Kim said that scientists can know if a new variant is emerging by looking at the sequence of variant from all over the world. If we want to open up, we need to get on top of it as quickly as possible, because air travel can spread the coronaviruses fairly efficiently.
