Austin announced on his social media accounts that he tested positive on Sunday morning and is currently experiencing mild symptoms.

The Pentagon chief said he will be staying at home for the next five days and will attend a lot of meetings.

In his absence, deputy secretary Kathleen Hicks would represent him.

Austin said that he last met with the President on December 21, a week before his symptoms emerged, and that he tested negative on that day.

The defense secretary got a booster shot in October.

Austin noted that his fully-vaccinated status has rendered the infection much more mild than it would otherwise have been. The vaccines work and will remain a military requirement for our workforce. I encourage everyone to get a booster shot. This is still a readiness issue.
