Ashes: Ben Stokes has no ambition to be England captain

In one previous Test, Ben Stokes led England.

Ben has given his support to current England captain Joe Root.

England went down to Australia to lose the series at the earliest opportunity and that has put the position of the leader under scrutiny.

The only credible alternative would be all-rounder Ben Stokes, who has a guaranteed place in the team.

"I've never really wanted to be a captain," he said.

"Captaincy is more than making decisions in the middle, it is about setting fields, picking the team, and making decisions out there in the middle." A captain is someone you want to play for. I always want to play for Joe Root.

In 2020, England lost to the West Indies when Joe Root was on maternity leave.

He was in charge of the one-day international series win over Pakistan earlier this year when the entire England squad had to be replaced because of Covid-19.

The fourth Test between Australia and England will start on Wednesday in Sydney, and will be the 60th match for the Englishman.

He will surpass the England record of 59 set by Cook.

In the last three years, Root has only won one of the five Tests he has played, following the 2-0 loss in Australia in the last series and the 4-0 defeat in Australia in the last one.

Despite the length of his tenure, Stokes does not believe that Root is ready to give up being captain.

"I don't think that's true with Joe," said Stokes. He's brought this team a long way. He's done some great things. This series has not gone well from a captaincy point of view, but from a team and results point of view.

It's Joe's decision. He shouldn't have to do it. I'm pretty sure Cooky did the same thing. He did it for a long time and when his time was up, he was done. There are no discussions near Joe yet.

Chris Silverwood has seen his team win only one of their past 12 Tests.

Silverwood will miss the fourth Test but is expected to return for the series finale.

"Unfortunately, the captain and coach bear the scrutiny, but there are 10 other guys out there in the field."

Chris Silverwood is a players' coach. He stands up for everyone.

It's your job to write about their futures, but they know they have the support of everyone in there and that's all that matters."
