Kieran Trippier: Newcastle plan to make Atletico Madrid defender first of four January signings

The first of at least four new signings is hoped to be Trippier.

On New Year's Day, the Magpies submitted a formal bid for Trippier, who they plan to sign next week.

Eddie Howe is hoping that the potential arrival of the England defender will be followed by at least three more new arrivals as he attempts to keep his club in the top flight.

Trippier appeared to wave goodbye to the fans at the Wanda Metropolitano after playing all 90 minutes of the win over Rayo.

The manager of the team said that it always depends on the footballer.

"We want him and hope he stays with us, but it is clear that when a player wants to leave he can't be retained."

Trippier was signed by Howe from Manchester City in January 2012 after an impressive loan spell at Turf Moor.

After four years at Spurs, Trippier joined Atlante Madrid and helped them win the La Liga title last season. He was named to the La Liga team of the year.

Micky Quinn, a former player at the club, wants the new owners to strengthen the squad in January.

He has 35 caps for England and started in last summer's Euro 2020 final against Italy, setting up the opening goal.

The 19th place team in the premier league has just one win this season. The defence has conceded 42 goals, the most in the league, and Howe hopes Trippier can help shore it up.

Trippier would bring experience and quality to the defence.

The 80 goals they conceded was the most ever recorded in a calendar year by a Premier League team. Only eight sides have ever let in more than 42 in the first 19 matches of a season.

The leakiness of the team has proved costly, with the team dropping more points from winning positions than any other team.

The picture is plain: this is a defence which badly needs reinforcements in January, and the fact that they have allowed more shots on their goal than any other team in the league this term is a sign.

Manchester United fought back to claim a draw against a team in the bottom half of the league.

Eddie Howe hasn't been able to improve that department since taking over from Steve Bruce, so he has turned to a familiar face for help.

Trippier was coached by Howe in the Championship for two seasons. Trippier has gone on to become one of Europe's top right-backs, reaching a European final with Spurs before winning La Liga with Atleti Madrid, where Diego Simeone's coaching has improved his defensive skills.

Trippier's creativity from crosses and set-pieces has made him a favourite of England boss Gareth Southgate, who turned to him at key moments throughout the Three Lions' run to the Euro 2020 final last summer.

Trippier will add leadership, experience and quality to the backline if he is brought to St James' Park. It would be a transfer that would boost their hopes of staying in the league.
