The European Commission wants to label some gas and nuclear power as green.

Nuclear and gas are important to the transition to cleaner power according to the proposal.

Germany's environment minister called the plan wrong.

The Commission's proposal says fossil gas and nuclear energy sectors can contribute to the decarbonisation of the Union's economy.

Only gas and nuclear plants with the highest standards would be considered green. Nuclear plants would have to have strict waste disposal plans. Gas plants have a limit on how much carbon dioxide is released.

The proposal will become law if a majority of EU members back it.

Nuclear power was pushed for by France. Nuclear energy is used for 70% of the country's electricity, but will be cut to half over the next 15 years.

France will reduce its reliance on nuclear power by shutting down 12 of its reactors.

Germany is in the process of phasing out nuclear completely and only has a few remaining plants.

Steffi Lemke, the German Environment Minister, said that the proposal was wrong and could lead to environmental disasters and large amounts of nuclear waste.
