Airlines canceled nearly 8,000 flights over new year's weekend amid wintry weather conditions and rising COVID-19 cases among crew members

Thousands of flights were canceled over the holiday weekend.

The data from FlightAware suggested that nearly 8,000 flights had been canceled over the weekend.

On Saturday, 4,740 flights were canceled, while the figure on Sunday was 3,283.
There have been disruptions due to an increasing number of Omicron coronaviruses variant cases among crew members.

The state with the most snow was Chicago. CBS Chicago reported that up to 9 inches of snow could hit the city. More than 400 flights were axed at O'Hare International Airport and more than 100 at Midway International Airport on Saturday.
Southwest Airlines, SkyWest, American Airlines, and Delta Air Lines were among the airlines that canceled flights over the new year's weekend, with Southwest suspending operations at both Chicago airports due to the severe weather forecast. The airline canceled more than 500 flights on Saturday.
Southwest didn't reply to Insider's request for comment.
China Eastern axed almost 1,000 flights over the weekend.

The travel industry has been affected by mass flight cancelations. According to Insider, airlines canceled at least 4,200 flights on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day due to a spike in Omicron COVID-19 infections. According to Insider's Grace Dean, about 13,000 flights were scrubbed in the last week of the year.
