The Bulls won their seventh straight game on Saturday, as DeMar DeRozan hit a buzzer-beating 3-pointer for the second night in a row.
The first player in NBA history with game-winning buzzer-beaters on consecutive days is DeMar DeRozan.
"Just to hit a buzzer-beater in general is amazing, especially when you do it on the road," he said on the video call. I don't know. I'm not sure if I'm dreaming. If it's true right now.
It's an honor to be trusted in the fourth quarter. My teammates always leaned on me to be that calm presence to bring us home when things were not going well. As long as we have time, I bring that calm presence as much as I can in the fourth quarter.
After catching an inbound pass from Coby White with 3.3 seconds remaining in the game, he dribbled into the corner and faked a shot to make sure he got his feet set.
He had 28 points, nine rebound, and five assists. Kyle Kuzma hit a go-ahead 3-pointer on the previous play, which necessitated his shot at the buzzer.
"DeMar told me to drink my beer," he said.
The Bulls have the best record in the Eastern Conference at 24-10), thanks to their winning streak and a loss by the Nets.
Despite not being at full strength, the Bulls have continued to win. Both Lonzo Ball and Alfonzo McKinnie have cleared health and safety protocols and should be able to return for Monday's game against the Magic. Billy Donovan can return from the league's protocols too.
Chris Fleming said he was relieved he could give this back to his coach. I was fortunate to be able to see the guys from a different point of view.
I told them how thankful I was for the partnership and how hard they worked to make the situation a good one. That's how their character has been all season. They've been resilient, they've handled other blows, and different guys have been out.
In the fourth quarter, he has been at his best. He is scoring eight points in the final period on average, with a shooting percentage of 53% and a percentage of 54% from the 3-point line. He would be the first player in NBA history to put up that kind of production in the final period.
For someone who thrives on mid-range shots, it's unlikely that DeRozan will be the only player with two-game winning 3s this season. He has only made 25 total threes all season, but his 2.2 attempts per game would be his highest since the beginning of the year. Two of them have been game-winners.
"Thank God we have DeMar on our team," LaVine said.
