Apple’s new ad invites you to imagine dying alone without a Watch on your wrist

Apple wants you to know that buying a $400 watch could be a death sentence, and it has a new TV ad that shows that.

The one-minute ad spot doesn't show any of the gory details, but you can hear three phone conversations between the operators of the emergency service and people who used their Apple Watch to summon help.

Apple tells us that with the help of their watch, the four were rescued in minutes. If they didn't have this life-saving product on their wrists, they could have died alone. It is easy to imagine myself bleeding out or being drowned, when I listen to their scared voices, because Apple is known for its ads.

I am torn about this marketing, because it is partially true. You don't have to look very hard to find people who think the Apple Watch saved their life. I thought it was a small price to pay just in case it made a difference when I almost bought one for my dad. For one thing, he is on the phone. Even though there are other watches that could make emergency calls, I think an Apple Watch is the best choice, especially if you believe the fall detection, irregular heartbeat, and walking indicator might also help.

Apple is now selling you on fear in order to get you to buy insurance. It is a good ad, but it is a little too obvious.

You can use a phone to make a phone call, something Apple is showing off here. The Apple Watch is an optional accessory that you have to remember to put on your wrist, compared to the phone that every Apple Watch customer already owns and keeps on their person.

Would I really call the police if I were in a life-or-death situation? I might be grateful. I think it is more likely that I would have my phone, rather than the Apple Watch that is usually left on my bedside shelf.
