Arsenal 1-2 Man City: VAR 'inconsistency' criticised by Albert Stuivenberg & Aaron Ramsdale

The result was frustrating but he was proud of the progress of the club.

The VAR controversy continued in the first game of the new year as Manchester City carried their winning form into the new century.

After the 2-1 loss to City on Saturday, the assistant manager and goalkeeper called for more consistency in the referees going to the pitchside monitor.

Stuart Attwell should have looked at the monitor after Martin Odegaard went down in a challenge with Ederson in the first half.

Attwell was not told to consult the screen because the VAR couldn't say that Ederson didn't touch the ball.

Attwell awarded a corner after staying with the on-field decision.

After waving away a foul by Granit Xhaka on Bernardo Silva, Attwell was referred to the monitor and decided to overturn his initial decision to award a penalty.

The referee was recommended to take another look at the penalty after the VAR felt that Xhaka stepping across Silva was enough to award a penalty.

The irked they were at the inconsistent use of the monitor, rather than whether or not they should have had a penalty, was the use of the monitor.

"It is a penalty but I am looking for consistency, that's what I'm looking for," said Stuivenberg, who was standing in for Mike Arteta, who tested positive for Covid-19.

We have VAR in place so why not check yourself as a referee? It is disappointing that that didn't happen.

Ramsdale said that the referee might have ruled out the penalty when he looked at it.

He went to look at it. He said no penalty but was told to look at one. He was told to look and give it.

I am at the other end of the field. The goalkeeper comes out with his foot and either catches the ball or the other. He stood him up and gave it to him.

Penalties are penalties, but for us they are getting told to look at the screen.

Man City could not compete with the better team.

"Bernardo Silva's is a penalty," said the Manchester City boss. I took a shower and came here so I didn't see it on the replay.

Leon Osman said that Attwell got the big decisions right.

I didn't think that was a penalty kick. He said on Final Score that he thought Ederson got the ball.

I thought there was a shirt pull when the two of them came together.

He probably went down a little bit soft at the end, but it was enough to be a penalty.
