Chart shows how much protection people have against Omicron after 1, 2, or 3 shots of vaccine

A new chart shows how much protection is given by one, two, and three doses of vaccine.

It was published on Friday by the UK's Health Security Agency.

It found that the vaccine protection against catching COVID-19 with Omicron was less than with Delta.

After a second dose, protection against hospitalization waned, but a booster shot increased it again.

There is protection against disease and hospitalization from vaccines.

The UKHSA.

The data was collected between November and December. The first formal assessments of booster vaccine effectiveness against severe disease were provided by Eric Topol.

The statistics are here.

All vaccine brands combined for hospitalization.
The risk of hospitalization was reduced by half with one dose.
Within 24 weeks of the second dose, the reduction was 72%.
The risk was reduced over 24 weeks of the second dose.
Two weeks after the third shot, the risk was reduced by 85%.

All vaccine brands are combined for the symptom of the disease.
The risk of catching COVID-19 is reduced by 26% with one dose.
The second dose has an 18% reduction within 24 weeks.
2% reduction over 24 weeks of the second dose.
Two weeks after the third shot, the risk was reduced by 63%.

The US uses a different set of vaccines and the data from the UK isn't applicable to that.

The US hasn't used the vaccine given to older people in the UK. The single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine was never used in the UK. The UK is using only Pfizer and Moderna vaccines in its booster roll out.

The findings show that vaccination and boosters are effective against Omicron. The World Health Organization recently said that the variant is sweeping the world and could push health systems to the "brink of collapse".

It's not clear how long booster protection will last. The UKHSA reported that the protection against disease dropped after 10 weeks after a Pfizer booster among those who had already taken two Pfizer doses.
