Georgia will get another chance to beat Alabama and win a national championship after 41 years.
After falling to Alabama in the SEC championship game, the 3rd ranked Georgia secured a second chance by defeating the 2nd ranked Michigan 34-11 in the College Football Playoff semifinal at the Capital One Orange Bowl at Hard Rock Stadium on Friday night.
Georgia will play Alabama in the National Championship presented by AT&T on January 10. In Indianapolis, you can watch the following channels: The Tide has a seven-game losing streak to the Bulldogs.
Kirby Smart will try to beat his mentor, Nick Saban, for the first time after losing four in a row. In three of the four defeats, the Dogs had a double-digit lead. Jimbo Fisher defeated his former assistant, the first time this season that he had lost to him.
Alabama and Georgia will play in the CFP National Championship for the second time, the Tide won 26-23 in overtime in Atlanta at the end of the season.
Georgia has not won a national championship since 1980. Alabama will attempt to win its seventh title under the leadership of Nick Saban, and second in a row. While at LSU and Alabama, the coach is 9-2 against the team.
It was a huge bounce-back performance for the Bulldogs, who looked overmatched in a loss to the Tide. They beat Michigan, which was playing in the CFP for the first time, and enjoyed a renaissance under Jim Harbaugh. Georgia scored on each of its first five possessions and never punted in the first half as it built a 27-3 lead. The first five possessions of the game were scored by the Dogs.
Georgia put the finishing touches on the Michigan when quarterback Stetson Bennett threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to running back James Cook with 11:11 to go in the game. After Cook slipped behind two defenders for the score, Bennett raised his arms in the air.
Bennett, a former walk-on, played one of the best games of his college career, completing 20 of 30 passes for 313 yards with three touchdown.
Bennett threw a 9-yard touchdown to Brock Bowers for the first score of the game, as the bulldogs took the opening kick off and drove 80 yards for a touchdown. It was the 12th reception of the season and it set a Georgia record.
Georgia tailback Kenny McIntosh took a handoff to the right and threw an 18-yard touchdown to Adonai Mitchell. The trick play had been held in the pocket for a while, but McIntosh became the first Georgia tailback to throw a score since 2005.
After Jack Podlesny kicked a pair of field goals to push the lead to 20-3 late in the first half, Bennett struck once more with a 57-yard touchdown to Jermaine Burton down the right sideline to push Georgia's advantage to 27-3 with 1:38 left in the half.
Bennett completed his first nine passes and was 16-for-22 for 234 yards with two touchdown in the first half. Georgia had 330 yards of offense in the first two quarters, which was more than the Wolverines had allowed in the first 13 games.
Michigan, which had scored over 100 points in its previous three games, couldn't muster much against a Georgia defense that was vulnerable against the Tide in its previous game. Three times, the Wolverines turned the ball over, and they went 1-for-3 in the red zone.
The Michigan team was stopped on their fourth down at the Georgia 41. In the first half, Michigan's offense only had one play longer than 20 yards, a 42-yard pass to Roman Wilson. On the next play, Michigan had to settle for a field goal after the Michigan sacked McNamara for an 8-yard loss.
With Georgia throwing screen passes, they didn't allow a sack and held All-American Aidan Hutchinson to four tackles and only one tackle for loss. David Ojabo didn't have a tackle. McNamara was pressured on nine of his first 24 dropbacks and never got comfortable in the pocket.
The chances of a Michigan comeback in the second half were over after they turned the ball over on their first two possessions. The Georgia defense recovered a fumbled ball at the Georgia 47 and then forced a McNamara pass into the end zone.
It was a disappointing end for the Wolverines, who won their first Big Ten title in 17 years. They had won their previous five games, including a 42-27 win over Ohio State in the Big Ten championship game. Georgia's speed was no match for everything that had worked the past two months.
