Could electric velomobiles change micromobility? Meet the Kinner Car

If you like the retro style of velomobiles and like the hybrid car-bike nature of the Kinner Car, then I think you will find it interesting. The Kinner is described as a primarily human-powered vehicle, but you will still get electrical assistance.

The current prototype is a long, 100 cm wide, and has a 220 cm wheelbase, which is enough to allow it to be legally classified as an electric bicycle in Europe.

It has room for luggage under the hood.

The Kinner was created by Ari Jukka Luomaranta. I contacted him to find out more about it.

What type of motor will the vehicle use?

The Kinner will use an electric motor with automatic gears.
He says it is an innovative design. The engine feels like someone is pushing you. The motor is designed so that it won't require any action from the rider's part.
You can use the respective app on your mobile to turn the Kinner on.

The aim is to have the Kinner mostly muscle-powered. He has focused on a lightweight design with roadbike wheels.

There are plans to develop two more variations of the vehicle, one without pedals and the other without a motor.
Does the Kinner fill a void?

In cities around the world, there are more and more ebikes, escooters, tri- and quadcycles on the streets. I wonder if there is a place for vehicles like the Kinner.

There will be demand for this kind of vehicle in the future according to Luomaranta.

He says the Kinner embodies a more social concept. You can ride it with anyone. It can be built in a variety of ways to accommodate different social activities.

Luomaranta explains.

You can ride it in resorts and areas where you can move with someone without traffic regulations. You can exercise with each other. You can travel with luggage like a tent and go on long trips with it.

You can rent one and ride in the central part of the town. It is a perfect sports car to dress up nice and ride slowly on a boulevard with zero emissions.

As European cities transform their central areas into low-emission zones, the Kinner could provide a viable replacement for cars, by offering comfort without any environmental impact.

When will the Kinner be available?

The velomobile comes with a price tag of $17,448 and will be the first delivery.
The first batches of six cars will be made in the beginning of January, according to Luomaranta.

The pedalcar will come with integrated sportwatch, navigator, and anti-theft system, but you can also choose to add extras.

The Kinner can be seen in the video below.

I am interested in seeing velomobiles catching on, especially if they can combine modern design with a classic retro look.
