The White House has granted NASA a six-year life extension for the International Space Station, allowing it to continue operations until 2030.

The European Space Agency, the Canadian Space Agency, the Japan Aeronautical Exploration Agency, and Russia's federal space corporation were directed by the Biden-Harris administration to work with NASA to enable the International Space Station.

Nelson said he was pleased that the Biden-Harris administration had committed to continuing station operations through 2030. The International Space Station has returned enormous scientific, educational and technological developments to benefit humanity for more than 20 years.

NASA wants to free up appropriations for its Artemis program of crewed lunar exploration by handing over the day-to-day operations of the space station to commercial entities.

Nelson said that the United States' continued participation on the International Space Station will enhance innovation and competitiveness, as well as advance the research and technology necessary to send the first woman and first person of color to the moon under NASA's Artemis program and pave the way for sending the first humans to

The extension will allow for a seamless handover of research and commercial activities from the International Space Station to new private outposts. NASA has recently entered into agreements with companies to develop commercial space stations, either as free-flying platforms or as a temporary extension to the International Space Station before it separates on its own.

The International Space Station has hosted a continuous series of expedition crews for more than two decades. Over 4,200 research investigations have been hosted by the station as a microgravity laboratory. More than 1.5 million students per year in science, technology, engineering and math have been involved in outreach activities aboard the space station.

JAXA has certified that the Kibo laboratory and related components are capable of supporting activities until the year 2030. The International Space Station has recently been attached to a new docking port and a new multipurpose laboratory module, but at the same time, the partnership between the two agencies has been proposed to be left in favor of deployment of its own space station.

There are growing tensions between the US and Russia on more mundane matters, though the space station partnership has survived similar challenges before.

Congress considered legislation to continue use of the space station through the year 2030. The bipartisan support for the bills in the House and Senate did not translate into a vote.

Nelson said that it's more important than ever that the United States continues to lead the world in growing international alliances and modeling rules for the peaceful and responsible use of space.
