Betty White was the Golden Girl of US television, celebrated for her comic acting abilities from TV's early days up to the 21st century, while remaining committed to her animal activism.

She told The Hollywood Reporter that she had to keep acting so that she could afford her charity work.

During the height of The Great Depression, she moved with her family to Los Angeles, where she began working as an actress and model. During the Second World War, she had to put her career on hold to work for the American Women's Voluntary Services.

After the war, White continued with her ambitions of becoming a celebrity, landing her own radio show, and then appearing on a variety talk show.
