The Consumer Technology Association announced today that the tech conference in Las Vegas will end on January 7th instead of the last day. The shorter schedule is an additional safety measure in the face of a surge of COVID-19 diagnoses.

Over the last two weeks, a number of large companies have dropped their physical presence at the conference. It is the largest tech conference in the world, and typically draws more than 10,000 people each year.

The show must go on according to the president and CEO of the CTA.

The US set a new record for the highest number of infections reported in a day. In Clark County, Nevada, 11 percent of COVID tests return positive results. Clark County is identified as an area of elevated disease transmission by the COVID tracker.

The CTA said in an email that more than 2,200 people are confirmed to be at the show. CTA president and CEO Gary Shapiro has said that the show will go on despite the fact that many of the show's attendees have decided to stay in Las Vegas. In the last two weeks, the CTA said that 143 companies have signed up for in-person exhibits.

Attendees will need to show proof of vaccination to get their badges. The CTA has requested that they test for COVID-19 less than 24 hours before the conference, and will be giving away free rapid tests to help with that. International travelers will get a free test after the show ends, and masks will be required.
