Eligible US residents can apply for help with their internet bills under the new program. The bipartisan infrastructure law passed in November gave $14.2 billion to the program.

Households can take up to $30 a month off their internet service bill. The discount is up to $75 per month for households on Tribal lands. The program could help connect millions of people to the internet who haven't had access to it at home, especially in communities that have faced more barriers to getting online.

According to a report by the FCC, almost a third of people living on Tribal lands lack high-speed internet at home. Only 1.5 percent of city dwellers have high-speed internet access. Cost is often another barrier on top of limited infrastructure. The United States has the second-highest broadband costs out of 35 countries studied by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. The US Census Bureau says that American Indian and Alaska Native people have the highest poverty rate in the US.

Someone needs to be able to get online to apply for the program.

A one-time $100 discount for a laptop, tablet, or desktop computer from participating providers is available to people who are eligible for the affordable broadband program.

The temporary Emergency Broadband Benefit Program was started to help Americans during the COVID-19 PAIN, but it is now being replaced by theAffordable Connectivity Program. The program offered a higher discount of $50 a month for households not living on Tribal lands.

The criteria for who can apply was expanded by the FCC. Being eligible for the food assistance program for women, infants, and children, now also makes a household eligible for the program. A household with an income that is less than 200 percent of federal poverty guidelines is now eligible.

There is more money going to close the digital divide in the US. $65 billion is included in the new $1 trillion infrastructure law. According to a Biden administration fact sheet, more than 30 million Americans live without adequate broadband infrastructure.
