Rajon is going to another team.
Shams Charania of Stadium and The Athletic reported that the Los Angeles Lakers traded Rajon Rondo to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday. Los Angeles would receive a shooting guard in return, according to Adrian.
According to a report by Charania on Thursday, the Cleveland Cavaliers were in serious talks to land the point guard after Ricky Rubio suffered a season-ending knee injury.
The Los Angeles Clippers and Atlanta Hawks signed him to a contract in the off-season. The veteran point guard helped lead the Lakers to the title.
It's not surprising that he was traded.
Even with the loss of Collin Sexton, Cleveland could have used more depth in the backcourt.
The connections to a veteran leader with championship experience made sense since the Cleveland is a playoff contender. He was intriguing for a number of other candidates.
While he is no longer the player he was in his prime for the Boston Celtics, he still has four All-Star selections and four All-Defensive selections on his resume. He was a double-double threat who could get out in transition, score at the rim and facilitate for teammates either on the break or on kickouts after he drew multiple defenders with drives.
He has played for the Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento Kings, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans, Lakers, Hawks, Clippers and Lakers again this season.
The University of Kentucky product was a rotation player for the purple and gold this season. He played in 18 games and averaged 3.1 points, 2.7 rebound, 3.7 assists and 0.7 steals in 16.1 minutes a night.
While he's not as dominant as he was on the Celtics at 35 years old, he still brings a lot to the table.
If he can use his playmaking skills to help the team reach the playoffs, he will be a part of the rotation.
Cleveland is a young team with building blocks such as Darius Garland and should be in a good position to compete for a playoff spot for the foreseeable future. During four straight NBA Finals appearances, it had four different players in the same year, with the last one being LeBron James.
The franchise's ceiling is not there this season, but it has someone with championship experience to address the backcourt depth problems.
