NOT REAL NEWS: A look at what didn't happen this week

The workers are near the top. The Kennedy Space Center's Vehicle Assembly Building has a NASA logo on a scaffold. The Associated Press reported on stories that said NASA had hired 24 theologians to assess how the world would react if we discovered alien life. This is a file photo of John Raoux.

Some of the most popular but completely untrue stories and visuals of the week are listed. Even though they were shared on social media, they are not legit. The AP checked them out. Here are the facts.

NASA has not hired theologians to study alien life.

NASA hired 24 theologians to assess how the world would react if we discovered alien life.

NASA did not hire any theologians to study the reaction humans would have to the discovery of alien life. The Center of Theological Inquiry in New Jersey received some funding from NASA to study the potential societal impact of finding life beyond Earth. The portion of the program that was funded by NASA ended in 2017, an agency spokesman told The Associated Press. Rev. Andrew Davison, who participated in the research, announced that he was publishing a book called "Astrobiology and Christian Doctrine." The University of Cambridge student confirmed to the AP that he wasn't hired directly or paid a salary by NASA. He said that Cambridge continued to pay his salary while he was in the program. The joke was that the NASA hires were planting the seeds for the main storyline of 2022. NASA was not involved in the selection of researchers, according to the agency. The fellows were not considered NASA employees. Four years ago, the NASA-funded parts of the research ended. The NASA spokesman told the AP that grant recipients are not employees, advisors, or spokespeople for the agency. The researchers and scholars involved with this study were funded by the Center for Technology in the Infrastructure, not NASA. The purpose of the program was not to advise NASA, but to convene scholars in the humanities to discuss research in the field of Astrobiology, the scientific field that studies the potential of the universe to harbor life outside Earth. The reflections on the societal implications of Astrobiology are being published in a series of individual monographs and peer-reviewed academic journal articles by the theologians, religion scholars, philosophers and literary scholars who participated in our research program for visiting scholars at the Center of Theological Inquiry.

Water is used on COVID-19 tests.

If you put water on home COVID-19 tests, you will get a positive result, which is evidence that the tests are unreliable or that you are detecting the disease in the tap water.

There is no evidence that the virus that causes COVID-19 is in drinking water. The tests aren't made to be used with other liquids and will give inaccurate results. There are videos and photos on social media showing positive results for rapid COVID-19 tests after being doused with water. A TikTok video showing a positive home test after being placed under a running faucet has been viewed 10 million times. It has been used to support false claims on social media. It was not clear what brand of test was used. A post with more than 82,000 likes onInstagram shows photos and a video of several home tests that have positive test results. The caption reads, "Now it makes me look even deeper, is it the water?" The videos don't show that the coronaviruses is in the water. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the virus has not been found in drinking water. The World Health Organization says that the coronaviruses is not transmitted through water. The clips don't show that the tests are unreliable. The tests are being used wrong. The California COVID-19 testing task force's senior director, Dr. Nam Tran, said that the tests are designed to be used in an exact way. A sample that isn't intended for a test can lead to inaccurate results. The device was designed to test for a certain thing and as you deviate from what it was designed to do, it will give sometimes unpredictable results. A user applies an extract reagent to the test and places a sample in their nostril. Two lines show up on the testing strip if the virus is found. It is rare for home tests to result in false negatives, but some do. The BinaxNOW is not for use with water or any other liquids, according to an email from an Abbott Laboratories spokesman. Other liquids can have different chemical properties. The spokesman said that spreading misinformation with deliberate misuse of a medical product is dangerous to public health.

There are posts that are misleading on Anderson Cooper interview.

CNN journalist Anderson Cooper wants Social Security payments to be stopped for people who are unvaccinated.

In an August 4 interview, Bill Gates was asked if the federal government should enforce COVID-19 vaccine mandates by withholding Social Security or other federal benefits from people who don't comply. Cooper didn't say he supports such mandates. The clip of the interview was shared by social media users. Anderson Cooper wants Social Security to be taken away. The original clip for context was not included in the widely shared tweet. The full video and transcript of the episode show that Cooper was only asking an interview question. Gates was asked if he had to be vaccine free in order to work for the corporation. Is that something you support? If you want to get on an airplane, you have to bevaccinated, if you want to get Social Security, you need to bevaccinated, and if you want to get whatever benefits they give, you have to bevaccinated. Is that something the US can do? Gates did not directly respond to the issue of Social Security, but he did say that unvaccinated people are the main source of transmission. You can make a compelling case there. Will it work to get people to seek out the vaccine once you get far beyond that? He said that people need to be open minded to what tactics can help get people protected. During the interview, Cooper didn't say he supports taking away Social Security benefits from the unvaccinated. CNN's public relations representative told The Associated Press that Anderson was posing a question and not implying that he supports the position.

Images attribute quotes on inflation to Psaki.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that if you don't buy anything, you won't experience inflation.

There is no record of Psaki making that statement, and the image sharing that quote was previously published as satire. The image on Facebook says that if you don't buy anything, you won't experience inflation. She said that people should barter so you won't see a price tag. A photo of Psaki appears to show her speaking at a press conference. There is no record of Psaki making quotes attributed to her in the image. A label on the image clearly marked it as satire, as it was shared in December by a satire account. Many commenters suggested that the quotes were true, despite the fact that the label was removed from the version being shared on Facebook. One wrote that it was the perfect example of how stupid the administration is. An example of how tone deafness this administration is. The White House did not reply to the request.

Chris Wallace has a show on CNN.

Chris Wallace's first show on CNN received the lowest ratings in cable news history.

Wallace's show on CNN+ hasn't yet launched, and it will air on a streaming service, not cable news. Social media posts are suggesting that Wallace's show on CNN+ was not well received by viewers and that its first show on CNN received record-low ratings. That is impossible since the show hasn't even aired. It won't have the same ratings as traditional television shows when it does. A CNN spokeswoman told The Associated Press that the claim was false. CNN+, the subscription streaming service that is debuting in Q1 2022, will launch with Chris's show. The post is false because CNN+ won't have traditional ratings like linear television. America's Last Line of Defense is a network of satirical websites whose content often gets shared on social media as if real. CNN said on the same day that Wallace would join them that he was leaving Fox News.
