Elusive atmospheric molecule produced in a lab for the 1st time

The University of Hawaii at Mnoa has synthetically produced methanediol, a molecule that is important to the organic, atmospheric science and Astrochemistry communities. Their discovery and methods were published in the journal.

Methanediol is also known as methylene glycol. The simplest geminal diol is CH2(OH)2, a molecule which carries two groups at a single carbon atom. The formation of aerosols and reactions in the ozone layer of the atmosphere can be achieved by the use of these organic molecules.

The research team is made up of Department of Chemistry Professor Ralf Kaiser, Cheng Zhu, N. Fabian Kleimeier, and Santosh Singh. The gas phase stability of this molecule was confirmed by the calculations done by University of Mississippi Associate Professor Ryan Fortenberry.

Researchers said the findings show that geminal diols are a key player in atmospheric and interstellar environments. Astronomers may be able to use radio telescopes to find methanediol in deep space.

This strategy of first synthesising geminal diols may eventually bring us closer to understanding the structure and chemical bonding of exotic organic molecules, which according to textbooks "should not exist." The stability and preparation of methanetriol [CH(OH)3] and methanetetraol [C(OH)4] are being investigated by the authors.

The elusive atmospheric molecule was produced in a lab for the first time on December 31, 2021.
