Hundreds of homes were burned and tens of thousands of people were evacuated after a rare wind-driven wildfire tore through suburban neighborhoods in Colorado.

More than 500 homes, a hotel and a shopping center have burned and tens of thousands of people have been evacuated in the area. The intensity of the fires that quickly swept across the region as winds gusted up to 105 mph may have caused more severe injuries or death. The first fire erupted just before 10:30 a.m. and was attacked quickly and laid down later in the day, with no structures lost.

A fierce, wind-driven wildfire destroyed hundreds of homes, injured at least a half dozen people and prompted the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents in and around two towns east of the Rockies near Denver, authorities said on Thursday. The prairie grass fire was believed to have been started by sparks from power lines and transformers that were knocked down by high winds in Colorado. The Boulder County emergency management office said on its website that all residents of Superior, Colorado, with a population of about 13,000, were ordered to leave immediately.

The Boulder County Sheriff said that 600 homes, a Target shopping complex and a hotel have been destroyed by fire.
