When Canon revealed the new EOS-1D X Mark III in January 2020, we proclaimed that the DSLR was still alive, but that it would be the last model in the line.

The production and development of the EOS-1 is expected to end within a few years.

The interview Canon's chairman and CEO Fujio Mitarai gave this week to the Japanese newspaper was pointed out by CanonRumors. The piece shows how high-end interchangeable-lens cameras have taken market share from the DSLR cameras.

The CEO is quoted as saying that the market needs are rapidly moving toward cameras. We are moving people in that direction. The Mark III is the last model in Canon's flagship series of DSLRs and will be the last one in a few years, according to an article.

It doesn't mean this is the end of Canon DSLRs. The article makes it clear that the future of the segment is mirrorless cameras like Canon's own EOS R3 and that the company plans to continue making DSLR cameras for the time being.

The Mark III is still an active product and its estimated lifespan is still measured in years. The broad details of Mr. Mitarai's interview are true according to a Canon US spokesman. The exact dates for the conclusion of development/termination of production for a flagship DSLR camera are not known.
