Tens of thousands of people woke up on Christmas morning to a surprise.

On 25 December, the bank mistakenly deposited over one hundred million dollars into 75,000 accounts.

The job of recovering the money is more difficult because it was deposited in accounts at other banks, according to The Times.

Payments from 2,000 business accounts were made twice.

The bank said that some payments from corporate clients were duplicated on recipients' accounts.

"None of our clients were left out of pocket as a result and we will be working hard with many banks across the UK to recover the duplicated transactions over the coming days."

The mistake may have meant that some people were paid twice from their employer's account, although the second payment was funded by the bank.

The payroll manager told the BBC that the blunder had cast a shadow over Christmas and Boxing Day.

They said that it ruined their holiday period because they thought they had done something wrong.

I thought it was me who was going to get in trouble at work.

They said that there was no information about how firms should explain the second payment to their staff.

The payroll manager said it was a complete mess. I don't know how they are going to recover it.

The bank said that it had begun talking to the other banks.

The banks would look to recover money from their customers' accounts.

It was not clear how the banks would respond if their customers had already spent the money, meaning returning it would push them into overdraft.

People may be contacted directly to get the money back.
