A send-off to 2021, and guidance for a new year, is a validation of the country's trauma and a path for the future, is the last work of the year by poet Amanda Gorman.
The poem, titled New Day's Lyric, was released on Wednesday via social media. It takes just five lines and 48 lines to sum up the year of disappointment, learning, and grief.

In an interview with the Associated Press, she explained that she wanted to write a piece that embodied the complicated feelings of 2021. She told the Associated Press that this is a unique New Year's Day because even as we toast our glasses to the future, we still have our heads bowed for what has been lost. One of the most important things the new year reminds us is that this will pass. You can't relive the same day twice.
The poem's release was a collaboration. The poet explained that the debut was part of a campaign for the International Rescue Committee. Meta has pledged $50,000.
In an interview with Vanity Fair before the release, Gorman said that she wanted to partner with the social media company as a reflection of her own experiences over the last year, reconciling with intense social and environmental change and the accompanying narratives "we interact or meet with on social media."
The poem's leading lines begin with a request for us all to come together, even though the past few years have seemed filled with political, environmental, and social lines.
May this be the day.
We come together.
We come to heal.
We come to weather.
We come to tend.
We come to better after being Battered.
It was tethered by this year of longing.
We are learning.
We were not ready for this.
We have been prepared.
We vow that no matter what.
We are weighed down.
We must always move forward.
The lyrics of "Auld Lang Syne" were reworked into a new message for all Americans.
We heed the old spirit.
In a new day.
We hear it in our hearts.
For auld lang syne, my dear.
For auld lang syne.
Time wants you to be bold this year.
Time said to be bold.
When you honor yesterday.
Tomorrow is when you will find.
Know what we have fought.
Need not be forgotten.
It makes us one.
Come over and join this day.
Wherever we come together.
We will overcome.
The youngest inaugural poet in U.S. history was 19 years old, and he was the first youth poet Laureate. Her outlook on a new year shows both youthful optimism and a somber acknowledgement of the pain, grief, and anxiety that's filled 2021. The generation most affected by the damage done to young users is still using the app to make a difference, even though the company continues to defend itself against evidence.
