The National Football League will hold a moment of silence before all of its Week 17 games for John Madden, who died Tuesday at age 85.

The NFL lost a giant on Tuesday with the passing of John Madden, according to a memo obtained by ESPN. Each home team in Week 17 is asked to observe a moment of silence in his memory.

The national anthem will be played before the moment of silence.

After 10 years as the coach of the Raiders, Madden won the Super Bowl in 1976, making him famous. He had a 103-32-7 regular-season record, and his.759 winning percentage is the best among coaches with more than 100 games.

After retiring from coaching at the age of 42, he entered the television booth and worked for four networks, entertaining millions on the broadcasts of the National Football League from 1979 to 2009. He became the face of Madden NFL Football, one of the most successful sports video games of all time, as well as being an ubiquitous pitchman in commercials.
