According to a report by Barron's, the company has issued voluntary recalls for nearly half a million vehicles to address potential failures in its trunk latching systems. All Model 3 units and certain Model S units have been recalled.
The cable harness that holds the camera in the rear of the car could be damaged by the opening and closing of the trunk. The Model S issue could cause the front trunk to not fully open.
There are 475,318 vehicles that are subject to the recall, of which 356,309 are Model 3 vehicles and 118,109 are Model S vehicles. Only 1 percent of the Model 3 vehicles will actually display the defect, compared to 14 percent of the recalled Model S vehicles.
The front trunk of the Model S could be a problem if it flies open while driving. In the Model S cars, the front trunk latch assembly may be missing, preventing the secondary hood latch from engaging.
The Model S problem is not a damaged component, but a misalignment, and since it is at a service center, it will be fixed. Model 3 owners will be able to have a new cable harness and guide protectors free of charge.
